Mariska Hargitay** has signed a new deal with Universal Television to return to NBC's long-running crime drama Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. The actress made the announcement via her official Twitter account on Saturday, May 25.

"Happy weekend," said the Golden Globe winner, who's played detective Olivia Benson since the show premiered in September 1999. "It's official. Season 15 -- I'll be back!" Hargitay's good friend, actress Debra Messing, retweeted the news and added, "Let the celebrating begin!"

NBC renewed Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in late April in the midst of Hargitay's contract negotiations. Her character's storyline was left open-ended in the May 22 season finale, with Olivia being held at gunpoint in her home by a serial rapist.

Hargitay earned $500,000 per episode in Season 14, making her television's highest-paid actress. The details of her new contract have not been revealed. The 49-year-old has received eight consecutive Emmy Award nominations since 2004, winning once in 2006.

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit returns Wednesdays at 9 p.m. EST this fall on NBC.

Salem- Mariska and her siblings were in the backseat of the car, sleeping, when they were involved in the car accident that claimed her mother, Jayne Mansfield's, life. The children were not injured. P.S. Mariska also got good genes from her dad, Mickey. He was Mr. Universe and I believe he played Tarzan in a film (Jayne played Jane).

I absolutely love her character. Had no idea her mother was Jayne Mansfield. No wonder she's so absolutely gorgeous! Great genes!

I agree-I really miss Stabler. I hope he at least does a guest spot soon. But I'm really glad Mariska will be back. When I saw the end of the season finale I wasn't so sure she would be.

That's great, now if only Christopher Meloni (Stabler) would come back. The show is not the same without him.

Riz: Her mom was Jayne Mansfield, model/actress(?) And pin up girl. She was killed in a car accident when Mariska was about 3. I can't remember if she was in the car with her Mom at the time, though. Maybe someone else can enighten us...then again just Google Jayne Mansfield. They even made a law or something like that named for Mansfield secondary to the way she died (that it was needless). I think it had to do with the hitch on the back of a semi or something. It reshaped the way they manufacture trucks or something?

Jayne Mansfield is her mother. She passed away in a car accident when mariska was a child. So glad she's staying. Now all we need is stabler.
