Trace Adkins' Confederate Flag Earpiece Sparks Controversy at Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting
November 29, 2012

Attention Trace Adkins: a nationally televised holiday special might not be the best place to show off that new Confederate flag earpiece.

The country star, 50, seems to have missed that memo, unfortunately, donning the accessory to perform "The Christmas Song" at the Rockefeller Center tree lighting Wednesday, Nov. 28.

The Stars and Bars, which served as the Confederacy's flag during the Civil War, is still a frequently used -- and highly controversial -- symbol. Some argue that the flag is merely a representation of Southern heritage, while others see its use as tacit support for the Confederacy's most abhorrent legacy: slavery.

Not surprisingly, Twitter users were none too pleased with Adkins' memorabilia, calling the singer out for what they viewed as a poor equipment choice.

The Louisiana-born, ultra-conservative performer has yet to speak out about the matter, although he certainly is a proud Southerner. As E! News points out, Adkins is a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, which he discusses in his autobiography, A Personal Stand: Observations and Opinions from a Freethinking Roughneck.

@stars and bars, it most certainly was! The south wanted to separate from the north because they DID NOT want slavery to end because the slaves were the base of the economic structure and without them there picking cotton their economy would suffer. They did not want federal telling the state what to do. Lincoln had been fighting for abolition since at least the 1840s! It had nothing to do with who brought them over but being able to keep them which is 1 of the main reasons for the separation and their creation of a separate flag from the USA! This was taught in schools and is in American history books. The flag was born under racist reasons!

@b.realist-confederate flag was not born or made for or because of slavery! Slavery existed long before. Northeners brought slaves over from Africa!

I never said slavery wasn't a reason for the war, but the war was brewing since the Constitution was written because many wanted a strong state government vs strong federal government. This is a major issue still today, yet race (as then) is all people want to talk about. It's ok to be proud to be black, Jewish, Asian, whatever, but being proud to be from the south automatically makes you a racist? Slavery was AWFUL, but it wasn't the only reason for the war. Period.

@lilmrsellis, almost ALL the reasons of the civil war was because of slavery. Please go back to your history books and that is what the confederate flag is racist and was born under racist reasons. The fight for abolition of slavery was going on since 1849s at least! Can't rewrite history!

@B.realistic, you are sadly misinformed on the events of the Civil War. The war started in 1860. Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclaimation in early 1863. It only applied to the states still waging war against the Union. Border states Missiuri, Kentucky, Maryland and Delaware still owned slaves until the 13th Ammendment in 1865. Slavery may have been a moral issue for Lincoln, but make no mistake it was just as much a political one.
