Paula Deen Maintains 36-Pound Weight Loss: "It's All About Moderation"

January 3, 2013

Nearly a year after she was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, Food Network star Paula Deen shed an impressive 36 pounds -- and kept it off!

"It's all about moderation," the butter-loving Southern chef says in the February issue of Woman's Day. "I just needed to learn to eat a normal portion size and not overindulge."

Health benefits aside, Deen had other reasons for wanting to revamp her diet. "I want to be here for my grandchildren. I think about them every day. My daddy was dead at 40. My mother was dead at 44. And look -- I'm 65 and I'm still here! Go, 65!" she laughs. "Waking up every morning is very exciting for me, to see what the day is going to bring."

Deen still eats her favorite foods, including her famous fried chicken and her grandmother's poundcake, though she does so less frequently. "It's amazing how little changes will give you big results," she says.

Even so, the TV star -- once a size 18 -- refuses to eat fat-free meals. "In my refrigerator, there's no light mayonnaise," Deen offers as an example. "I'd rather eat less of the real thing and have it taste really good than have diet stuff that tastes awful."

Deen, who resides in Savannah, Georgia, tells Woman's Day she's been able to curb her appetite by slowing down during meals. "Putting my fork down and having a conversation has been a huge help," she reveals. "Because it takes 20 minutes for your stomach to tell your brain that you're full."

I absolutely agree! Love Paula! She is correct about portion control vs. modifying recipes. I know people who just ruin recipes trying to make them healthier but end up making them inedible. Maybe that's the diet, make it taste so badly that no one eats it!

I live this lady! Paula sure does know how to cook! Lol. I totally agree with her too, moderation is the key. Its way healthier to try and eat fresh foods and indulge sometimes, than to try and eat pre-packaged fat free and low fat processed foods all the time. I gained a ridiculous amount of weight with my two back to back pregnancies. It took me almost 3 years to lose all the weight and then some.Wish I would've realized this sooner! Go Paula, looking good!!

She looks amazing at 65. Great job, Paula! I love her recipes too. Simple and tasty! I also love her reasons to lose weight, not for vanity but to stick around for her family.

Diet foods or those low in calorie/low in fat can actually be worse for your body than eating the regular version. For example regular mayo vs light mayo... Take a look at the ingredients. Regular mayo has like 4 vs the light mayo having a page worth. Moderation really is the key. No one should be eating low fat/low calorie and instead eat the regular stuff that hasn't been over processed to make it lower in fat/calories. The less ingredients the easier it is on your body to process.

'Diet stuff', prepared correctly, can be just as tasty as 'the real thing'. Stop implying the lighter route means dull and flavorless because it doesn't. Congrats on the weight loss though.
