Kris Allen's Jan. 1 car accident has given new meaning to his upcoming Out Alive tour.

The American Idol winner, 27, was involved in a gnarly head-on collision New Year's Day, and from the looks of the photo he posted of his smashed-up Ford truck on Instagram, he's lucky to have walked away from the wreck with just a broken wrist.

That said, it appears to have been a fairly nasty break. On Wednesday, Jan. 3, two days after the crash, the "Live Like We're Dying" singer announced that he was preparing to go under the knife as a result of the injury.

"Getting ready for surgery tomorrow morning," he tweeted. "Gonna get this hand back to 100% no matter what it takes."

Allen's determination is no doubt fueled at least in part by his upcoming tour, which was scheduled to kick off in Vermont on Tuesday, Jan. 8. "Don't worry everyone," he assured his followers on Twitter. "I may have broken my wrist but the Out Alive tour is still on."

The musician had some other good news to share with fans, too: He and his wife of four years, Katy, are expecting their first child.

"Thank you, Ford, for equipping me with a car that kept my whole family and the little one we have on the way safe," he wrote after the accident. "Yes, I got in a really bad wreck tonight, and yes, I'm having a lil baby."

i know, i didnt want to be insensitive either, but everone can relate to the fact that some situations are not funny at the time, but after time, the smoke has cleared and everyone is okay....you laugh. thank god he and his wife and unborn child were okay. im sure they will look back on this picture as i would and laugh

Ok! I can finally comment after reading yours! I ASSUMED he was intentionally making a face, but did not want to be cruel just in case. GLAD HE'S WELL ENOUGH TO JOKE AROUND! The best news for me personally? After hearing everyone was ok (miracle in that horrible wreck!) was that his wife did not miscarry or have any serious injury that affected their baby! SUCH A TRUE MIRACLE and BLESSING! GOD DEFINITELY HAD PLANS FOR THIS LITTLE ONE TO BE BORN SAFELY INTO THE WORLD! CONGRATS and BE THANKFUL !

LoL @Chase! I was laughing so hard I typed in OLO at first, instead of LOL! I was thinking the same thing, but I didn't want to seem insensitive! I thought, Wow! He's Stuck in that Scared Face ...Deer caught in headlights! ...Now see, that's the look of the; HILARIOUS CRAZY! HA! ...I'm really glad he's going to be fine .... As long as they Don't let the Psych Doc. come in the room, he may get to go home soon!

whoever took this picture and posted it should be shamed. he looks crazy. glad he is okay so that i can laugh about how crazy he looks in this picture. did he do his eyes like that on purpose??
