Julianne Hough: I Was Abused
January 2, 2013

Julianne Hough** could relate to her character in the new film Save Haven in a very personal way.

The actress, 24, who plays a survivor of domestic abuse in the movie, reveals in the February issue of Cosmopolitan magazine that she was abused as a child.

After Hough's parents divorced when she was 10 she decided to move from South Jordan, Utah, to London with her brother Derek and study dance at London's Italia Conti Academy of the Arts.

"While I was in London, I was abused, mentally, physically, everything," she tells the magazine.

"I was 10 years old looking like I was 28, being a very sensual dancer," Hough explains. "I was a tormented little kid who had to put on this sexy facade because that was my job and my life. But my heart was the same, and I was this innocent little girl. I wanted so much love."

The abuse got worse "when I started hitting puberty, when I started becoming a woman and stopped being a little girl," she says.

But Hough, who has been dating Ryan Seacrest** for over two years, declined to give any other details on her painful experience. "I'm a very forgiving person, and I don't want to hurt anybody," she explains. "What's past is past."

The actress did fight hard to get her part in the Lasse Hallstrom-directed film adaptation of Nicholas Sparks' bestseller, which opens in theaters Feb. 14. Safe Haven tells the story of Katie, who eventually falls in love with a widower, after escaping an abusive relationship with an ex-boyfriend.

Hough's costar/love interest Josh Duhamel** urged the director to cast her. "I told Lasse, 'There is a sadness in that room, something more complicated that the character needed to have," he says. "And that's what she has.'"

Sorry to hear a lot of young girls get preyed on and no one is there to save them unfortunately. On a side note IMO her acting is average. Maybe this role she will really get into since its relatable to her

She should name her abuser. If this person is still alive then he or she should be brought to justice.

I meant reasons it to bring the name up now.

For whoever said why bring this up now, I think it is because she is playing a role where her character went through something similar. Has total relevance. And there could be many reasons not to bring it up. There are cases that never go to trail because if lack of evidence many years later or other reasons. Sad but true. Maybe it has been dealt with legally, maybe it was a family member or maybe the person is dead now. But kudos to her or being so brave. No matter if it was one time or years of abuse it's still a difficult life changing thing and effects everyone differently. Money and fame can't take away robbed youth. At least she seems to be dealing with life in a positive way. Brave woman! And I can't get over how much she looks like Cameron Diaz here, but prettier.

What the hell was she doing looking 28 at 10 years old? Who was responsible for her while she was dancing sensuosly? The adult responsible for her should have never allowed her to do that in the first place. She was a child. 10 years old. Again, what the hell?!
