Hospital Involved in Kate Middleton Prank Call Slams Radio Station After Nurse's Death
December 8, 2012

King Edward VII hospital -- where Kate Middleton was treated earlier this week for extreme morning sickness -- has written a strongly worded letter to the Australian radio station responsible for the prank call to nurse Jacintha Saldanha, who was found dead of a suspected suicide** on Friday, Dec. 7.

In the letter, hospital chairman Lord Glenarthur calls the prank "foolish" and condemns the actions of the DJs involved.

"I am writing to protest in the strongest possible terms about the hoax call made from your radio station," Lord Glenarthur writes to 2DayFM. "It was extremely foolish of your presenters even to consider trying to lie their way through to one of our patients...That the call had been pre-recorded and the decision to transmit approved by your station's management was appalling."

On Tuesday, Dec. 4, DJs Mel Greig and Michael Christian phoned the King Edward VII hospital pretending to be Prince Charles and Queen Elizabeth in order to get information about the Duchess of Cambridge. Saldanha, who had been tending to Middleton during her stay, fell victim to the prank and passed the callers on to another employee, who then proceeded to give confidential details about the pregnant royal's condition.

Three days later, Saldanha, known to friends and colleagues as "Jess," was found dead of an apparent suicide. The 46-year-old nurse leaves behind a husband, Benedict Barboza, and two kids, ages 16 and 14.

"The immediate consequence was the humiliation of two dedicated and caring nurses who were simply doing their job," the hospital's letter continues. "The longer term consequence has been reported around the world and is, frankly, tragic beyond words."

In a press conference about the incident, station owner Rhys Holleran said the DJs involved were "completely shattered" over Saldanha's death. "These people aren't machines, they're human beings," he said. "What happened is incredibly tragic, and we're deeply saddened and incredibly affected by that...No one could have reasonably foreseen what ended up being an incredibly tragic day."

That said, the Australian Communications and Media Authority tells Us that they are discussing the matter with 2DayFM to determine whether an investigation should be launched.

Kate Middleton and Prince William**, for their part, said in a statement that they did not blame the hospital for the prank and offered their condolences to Saldanha's loved ones.

"The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Jacintha Saldanha," Kate and Prince William,, both 30, said in an earlier statement. "Their Royal Highnesses were looked after so wonderfully well at all times by everybody at King Edward VII Hospital, and their thoughts and prayers are with Jacintha Saldanha's family, friends and colleagues at this very sad time."

@pafena67 The nurse that took her life was Indian not White, why you think that makes any difference I'll never know.

When you take your own life its not a matter of being weak minded. Its a matter of being ill. So ill in fact that committing suicide is the one and only thing that makes sense. This woman was ill. She obviously thought this was the only way out.

Many pranks like this happen everyday and no one kills themselves over it. IT WAS NOT THEIR FAULT. She made that choice.

The prank of the DJ's may have just been the final thing gone wrong for this poor woman. We do not know her, her family or any problems she or they may have had. It is time to let this go back to being a private matter. Condolences to her family.

Sad, but death happens too many.

May she rest in peace. May the deejays someday forgive themselves for a practical joke gone very wrong. May her family feel the love, prayers and support even from across the Atlantic.

Im sorry but what the DJs and radio station did was wrong. And if u read the article she didnt tell the caller the information. She passed the call onto another nurse who gave out the information. But anyways, if the gag wasnt done, none of this would have happened point blank.

This is very tragic, of course, but let's keep in mind that we don't know for sure if it was the prank call that influenced this suicide. Just because the prank and her suicide happened around the same time frame doesn't necessarily mean it's what lead her to do it. She could have been depressed or just going through a rough time. It seems really weird to me that someone would take their own life because of a prank call. There's definitely more to this.

Also- everyone is bashing the two DJs, who had to get the approval to release this recording on the air. Upper management should have known better than to air to recorded call. They are the ones that should be fired.

@collegegirl- I 100% agree with you. Not only should the DJ's be at fault but that hospital should be equally responsible for how their nurses are trained. What nurse gives out private info to a person over the phone?! Especially regarding a celebrity or royalty?! It could have easily been someone trying to get info to sell to a magazine. The woman who killed herself obviously had more issues that have not been released.
