Brooke Burke: I'm Cancer Free!
December 12, 2012

Seven days after undergoing a thyroidectomy, Brooke Burke-Charvet has cause for celebration: She's cancer free!

"I just got the results back from all of my tests and great news -- the thyroid cancer has been removed from my body and all my lymph nodes are clear," the Dancing With the Stars co-host writes in a new entry on her ModernMom.com blog. "So I'm hoping that this is the end of the story. Woohoo!!! And thank GOD!"

**Burke-Charvet says her recovery following the December 6 procedure has been "much better than I expected it would be."

"I've been home for the past week, watching a lot of TV, which I never do," Burke-Charvet, 41, writes. "I've almost made it through the entire season of Showtime's . . . Homeland. I can't remember the last time I lost myself in someone else's story."

Continues the married mom of four, "It's so out of the ordinary for me -- to not be working or rushing from place to place driving the kids around. But I have to admit I could kinda get used to this . . . In a weird way, it's kind of the perfect ending to a very busy year. I've taken the rest of the year off to recover and catch up with my family and now we're just celebrating life."

I had my thyroid removed in 1989 and 12 years later some cancerous tissue was found in my lung. I only had to under go radioactive iodine therapy and am now cancer free ever since. Thyroid cancer is an easily curable cancer if caught early enough and the only follow up treatment is a dose of radioactive iodine which kills any remaining tissue after removal. Good luck to Brooke in her recovery.

That's good news, but it doesn't not mean she is totally cancer free. There is a small percentage that the cancer can return in the lung within 2 years of having the cancerous thyroid removed. My dad had thyroid cancer and had his removed and is still being checked every 6 months to make sure it doesn't show up in his lungs and its been 2 1/2 years since his surgery. The doctor told him when he reaches the 5 year mark without a reoccurrence of cancer anywhere, then he is considered a cancer survivor.
